Turns in Figure Skating: Three, Bracket, Rocker, and Counter-Rocking

A Turn is a rotational movement during which the skater moves from forward to backward or backward to forward on one foot. The four Turns — the Three, the Bracket, the Rocker, and the Counter-Rocking — are distinguished by the edge used and the direction of rotation relative to the curve.

The Four Turns

The Three is performed on one foot, from an outside edge to an inside edge or from an inside edge to an outside edge. The exit curve extends the lobe of the entry curve, and the skater turns in the direction of the curve. It is the fundamental Turn in figure skating: it is found in the approach of most jumps, from the toe loop to the lutz via the flip.

The Bracket is also performed from an outside edge to an inside edge or from an inside edge to an outside edge, but the skater rotates in the opposite direction to the curve — unlike the Three. The exit curve continues the entry curve, making this Turn mechanically less natural and technically more demanding in terms of torso and hip control.

The Rocker changes the logic: it is performed from an outside edge to an outside edge, or from an inside edge to an inside edge. The exit curve is skated on a different lobe than the entry curve, and the skater rotates in the direction of the entry curve. Its natural fluidity makes it a Turn very common in ice dance programs.

The Counter-Rocking is based on the same lobe change principle as the Rocker — outside to outside or inside to inside — but the skater rotates in the opposite direction to the entry curve, that is, in the direction of the exit curve. It is the Turn that requires the greatest mastery of proprioception and balance on the blade; it is generally practiced at an advanced club level.

Why mastering Turns is essential for progress

Turns are the technical backbone of figure skating. Every jump takes off from a precise curve: a poorly executed Three — shoulders rotating prematurely, tilted body axis, imprecise edge — directly affects the quality of takeoff and rotation in the air.

Working on Turns outside of jumps, in isolated steps and step sequences, is the most effective method to automate them. The goal is for the movement to become fluid and repeatable enough so the skater can focus all their attention on the jump itself.

Learning Turns and jumps inevitably leads to falls, mainly on the hips and tailbone. It is an essential accessory in clubs to unlock double and triple jumps, and it is also suitable for dedicated skaters working with a private coach.

Tips for integrating Turns into your training

  • Practice the Three and the Bracket on figure-eight patterns, slowly, maintaining a vertical body axis at the edge transition.
  • Use hockey lines as alignment markers to check the consistency and depth of entry and exit curves.
  • Record your passes to analyze the position of the torso, arms, and free leg at the moment of the Turn.
  • Strengthen deep abdominal muscles and adductors off the ice — they stabilize the blade and maintain the axis during rotation.
  • Wear protective shorts to retry difficult elements without fear — confidence in falling greatly accelerates progress.
